By applying qualitative methods and analyzing relevant literature reviews, the researchers investigated the impact of using Canva in an educational context on the learning motivation of English learning subjects. The conclusion in the analysis of various studies revealed that the application of Canva significantly increased student motivation, as reflected by substantially improved progress in average motivation scores. In addition, there were significant positive results in students’ writing skills. This finding is reinforced by the success of learning strategies such as sentence merging using Canva. Students also showed positive response in the use of Canva to build a dynamic and engaging learning scope. This research validates that Canva is an effective tool for stimulating student interest and dynamics in English language learning while fostering an interactive and flexible educational atmosphere. Therefore, it is recommended to organize training and workshops for teachers and conduct regular evaluations and further research to ensure the continuous effectiveness of Canva's application in learning. It is expected that the findings of this study can present a valuable contribution in improving educational methods in English that are creative and competitive.
Lisa, Pariyanto Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of Indonesian English Lecturers Association (JIELA) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/25 Fri, 30 May 2025 00:00:00 +0700 Evaluating Phonics Instruction for Preschoolers in Indonesia: Insights and Innovations in Early Literacy Assessment https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/7
Learning assessment is crucial for evaluating the effectiveness of instructional approaches. This study examines the assessment of early English reading skills through the phonics method in a bilingual kindergarten in Indonesia, focusing on children aged 5–6 years. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The sole participant in this research is an English teacher instructing the Kindergarten 2 Neverland class. The assessment covers letter-sound recognition, segmentation skills, and blending abilities, which are essential for early literacy development. However, this study is limited by the inclusion of only one informant, providing data from a single perspective. Additionally, the research focuses solely on specific aspects of phonics-based reading assessment, which may not capture the broader dimensions of early literacy acquisition. Despite these limitations, the findings emphasize the importance of assessing early English reading skills through the phonics method, highlighting its role in fostering foundational literacy in young learners. The insights gained from this study contribute to a better understanding of phonics-based assessment in bilingual education settings and underscore the need for continued research on effective literacy instruction for early childhood learners.
Sunarti Sunarti, Andini Linarsih, Annisa Amalia Copyright (c) 2022 International Journal of IELA (IJOIELA) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/7 Fri, 30 May 2025 00:00:00 +0700 Cultural Perspectives on Developing YouTube-based English Instructional Materials Using the ADDIE Framework for Young Learners https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/24
This study discusses the integration of cultural perspectives in developing YouTube-based English instructional materials for young learners in under-resourced contexts using the ADDIE framework and the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory. This study addresses the gap in existing studies on culturally responsive pedagogy by investigating how cultural relevance can be systematically embedded into each phase of instructional design with the use of YouTube as the primary platform for content delivery. The study details the procedural steps in creating culturally sensitive educational materials for students at SD Negeri 1 Taripa, Tiu Village, Poso Regency, Central Sulawesi Province. The data were gathered through surveys, interviews, and focus group discussions with one teacher and the students and were analyzed qualitatively. Through needs assessment, content development, multimedia implementation, and formative evaluation, the study found that culturally contextualized materials significantly enhanced student motivation, engagement, and vocabulary acquisition in under-resourced contexts. This study is limited by its small sample, short duration, and partial execution of the Evaluation phase, which may limit the broader applicability of the cultural perspectives using the ADDIE framework. Future research is needed to explore its applicability across different age groups, educational settings, teacher trainings, and cultural backgrounds.
Sumarni Ranga Copyright (c) 2025 Journal of Indonesian English Lecturers Association (JIELA) https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0 https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/24 Wed, 28 May 2025 00:00:00 +0700 An Analysis of Friendship in William Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/3
The purpose of this research is to analyze the types of friendship between Antonio and Bosanio in Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice. The core theme of this drama is friendship. This theme of friendship expresses the relationship between Antonio and Basanio. A true friend is consistently willing to put your happiness before your friendship. Friendships are relationships that can last throughout the life span, serving an important role in maintaining social connectedness at the end of life as well as with other relationships, such as with co-workers and members of organizations. While making new relatives is common in the early years, making new friends is more likely in later years than expanding kinship, at least within a generation. The data is taken from the drama using a psychoanalytic approach. The method used is a qualitative method. The results show that there are three types of friendship found in the novel, namely utility friendship, pleasure friendship, and benevolent friendship.
Delli Sabudu, Sabrina W J Husain, Nisfatun Palengkahu, Niken Yusuf Copyright (c) 2022 IJOIELA https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/by/4.0 https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/3 Thu, 08 May 2025 00:00:00 +0700 Designing Instagram-based Learning Materials to Enhance Novice EFL Learners’ Vocabulary Learning https://journal.my-iela.id/index.php/iela/article/view/17
This study aims to present the process of designing Instagram-based learning materials aimed at enhancing English vocabulary learning among novice EFL learners in Masewe village.
